SXSW 2013 was very fun but I had a concern...
Too many stupid drivers.
Normally Austinites aren't well known for their driving but walking downtown a week ago was downright scary. Even in the afternoon I was seeing multiple cars driving in the wrong lane. I knew South By was to blame.
If you are visiting Austin, please do not rent a car. There are bike rental shops all around town and the public transit system is getting better. We love our bikers and pedestrians and want them to be as safe as possible. Austin roadways were seemingly built to confuse people. I also don't see why people would want to be stuck in a soundproof box in the live music capital of the world.
Oh, and if you do decide to drive instead of supporting pedicabbers (who strike up excellent conversations and can give you the inside scoop on the music scene) or biking/segwaying/or just straight up walking and enjoying the vibes, Dallas might be more down your alley.
